Chorus - Lori Loftus, Director
The Concert Chorus is SCCC’s premier performing/touring chorus.
Choristers are chosen from auditions held May, August and early
September of each year. The Concert Chorus is comprised of approximately
70 choristers primarily from grades 7 through 12. Choristers are
promoted to the Concert Chorus upon displaying the maturity and musical
and vocal skills needed to meet the challenge of learning and performing
a large, sophisticated and difficult performance repertoire. It
is required that a member at this level regards the chorus as top
priority in personal scheduling. A yearly camp is scheduled in October
from Friday afternoon until Sunday afternoon. The Concert Chorus
performs regularly throughout Southern California for public and
private organizations. They tour nationally and internationally
every other summer. The Concert Chorus rehearses two hours weekly,
and includes music theory, Kodaly sight singing and ear training.
Additional rehearsals are called as needed before tours or other
special engagements. |

Apprentice Chorus members are chosen from auditions held in May, August

of approximately 50 choristers from grades 2 and 3. This entry-level
chorus for new members is a readiness program in which the basics of
vocal production and musicianship are presented in a manner suitable
for the age group. The emphasis is on musicianship training as developed
by Hungarian composer Zoltan Kodaly. Limited public performances are
scheduled during the year, including annual Holiday and Spring Concerts;
however, the emphasis at this level is preparatory training. The Apprentice
Chorus rehearses from 4:30 - 5:45 p.m. each week.

Primary
Chorus - Jerome Healy, Director
Primary Chorus is designed for children in the first grade. Children at
this level will begin to read some pitches and simple rhythms. Through
the use of the Kodaly Method the children are introduced to solfa syllables
and their relationship to the staff and to each other. At first the melodic
and rhythmic patterns – which are based on childhood chants –
are simple, but the children learn to associate them with the solfa syllables.
In time, the children will be able to read basic pitch and rhythm patterns
at sight. The repertoire of Primary Chorus includes folk songs and singing
games, which are fun to sing. Primary Chorus singers are prepared for
further instruction in subsequent levels of the Southern California Children's
Chorus. The Primary Chorus meets weekly for 40 minutes.

Kinder
Chorus - Jerome Healy, Director
Kinder Chorus is designed for children 4-5 years of age. With repeated
experiences Kinder Chorus singers will begin to develop and perceive the
concepts of music, which include the sense of steady beat and rhythm.
The repertoire of songs in Kinder Chorus include a wealth of age-old folk
songs and singing games, which are pleasing and possess aesthetic value.
All of this is accomplished through the use of the Kodaly Method of music
instruction for children. Kinder Chorus singers are prepared for more
detailed instruction found in subsequent levels of the Southern California
Children's Choir. The Kinder Chorus meets weekly for 40 minutes.
